According to Michael Drout, there have been published the following versions of The Children of Húrin, a story which will appear in book form next year, edited by Christopher Tolkien.

1977 - The Silmarillion - "Of Túrin Turambar" [prosa / prose]
1980 - Unfinished Tales - "Narn i Hîn Húrin" [prosa /prose]
1984 - The Book of Lost Tales, Part II - "Turambar and the Foalókë" & "The Nauglafring" [prosa / prose]
1985 - The Lays of Beleriand - "The Lay of the Children of Húrin" [poema aliterante / allliterative poem]
1994 - The War of the Jewels - "The Wanderings of Húrin" [prosa / prose]

SdA EM HIERÓGLIFOS / LotR IN HIEROGLYPHS

A figura mostra Senhor dos Anéis em hieróglifos egípcios (o texto superior), seguido de Livro de JRRT. Hieróglifos nem sempre são coloridos, mas dei a estes as cores que julguei adequadas - o glifo de senhor em vermelho, alusão ao Olho de Sauron; a perna em cor de pele convencional; os ziguezagues denotando água em azul; os anéis em amarelo. Em detalhe, a inscrição lê-se assim:

• Segmento de círculo com traço vertical = senhor
• Cinco glifos seguintes (perna, dois ziguezagues, dois anéis) = anel
• Três traços verticais = sinal de plural
• Grupo inicial da segunda linha (rolo de papiro, braço, sinal de amarrar e traço) = livro
• Dois glifos seguintes = de
• Quatro sinais alfabéticos = dj-r-r-t (JRRT)
• Homem sentado = determinativo que indica nome masculino

The picture shows Lord of the Rings in Egyptian hieroglyphs (the upper text), followed by Book of JRRT. Hieroglyphs are not always coloured, but I gave these the colours I judged to be adequate - the glyph for lord in red, an allusion to the Eye of Sauron; the leg in conventional skin colour; the zigzags denoting water in blue; the rings in yellow. In detail, the inscription is read as follows:

• Circle segment with vertical line = lord
• Five following glyphs (leg, two zigzags, two rings) = ring
• Three vertical lines = sign for plural
• Initial group of second line (papyrus scroll, arm, sign of binding and line) = book
• Two following glyphs = of
• Four alphabetical signs = dj-r-r-t (JRRT)
• Seated man = determinative indicating a man's name

Faz quase um ano que não publico neste blog. Mas a notícia é boa: Christopher Tolkien terminou de editar The Children of Húrin [Os Filhos de Húrin], e o livro será publicado no início de 2007.

SENHORAS DOS ANÉIS / LADIES OF THE RINGS
Em 2005-07-23 participei de uma mesa redonda no lançamento do livro Senhoras dos Anéis: Mulheres na Obra de J.R.R. Tolkien, organizado por Rosana Rios e editado pela Devir Livraria. É o primeiro livro no mundo (que eu saiba) que analisa exclusivamente as personagens femininas de JRRT. Senti-me honrado em escrever o prefácio.

On 2005-07-23 I took part at a round table at the launch of the book Senhoras dos Anéis: Mulheres na Obra de J.R.R. Tolkien [Ladies of the Rings: Women in the Work of J.R.R. Tolkien], organised by Rosana Rios and edited by Devir Livraria. It is the first book in the world (as far as I know) that analyses exclusively JRRT's female characters. I felt honoured to write the foreword.

De que lado da estrada dirigiam os gondorianos? Do direito, não do esquerdo como seria de se esperar de um autor inglês. Neste trecho do SdA, está claro que os veículos mais lentos andam à direita e os mais rápidos os ultrapassam à esquerda:

On which side of the road did the Gondorians drive? On the right, not on the left as would be expected from an English author. In this passage from the LotR, it is clear that slower vehicles drive on the right and the faster ones pass them on the left:
