NA ESTRADA EM GONDOR / ON THE ROAD IN GONDOR
De que lado da estrada dirigiam os gondorianos? Do direito, não do esquerdo como seria de se esperar de um autor inglês. Neste trecho do SdA, está claro que os veículos mais lentos andam à direita e os mais rápidos os ultrapassam à esquerda:
Mas a maior parte do tráfego saía pela estrada principal, que se virava para o sul [...] as carroças avançavam em três fileiras, uma mais veloz puxada por cavalos; a segunda mais lenta, grandes carroções com belas mantas multicoloridas, puxados por bois; e ao longo da borda oeste da estrada muitos veículos menores puxados por homens que avançavam a muito custo. On which side of the road did the Gondorians drive? On the right, not on the left as would be expected from an English author. In this passage from the LotR, it is clear that slower vehicles drive on the right and the faster ones pass them on the left:
But most of the traffic went out along the chief highway, and that turned south [...] the wains were moving in three lines, one swifter drawn by horses; another slower, great waggons with fair housings of many colours, drawn by oxen; and along the west rim of the road many smaller carts hauled by trudging men.
