SENHORAS DOS ANÉIS / LADIES OF THE RINGS
Em 2005-07-23 participei de uma mesa redonda no lançamento do livro Senhoras dos Anéis: Mulheres na Obra de J.R.R. Tolkien, organizado por Rosana Rios e editado pela Devir Livraria. É o primeiro livro no mundo (que eu saiba) que analisa exclusivamente as personagens femininas de JRRT. Senti-me honrado em escrever o prefácio.

On 2005-07-23 I took part at a round table at the launch of the book Senhoras dos Anéis: Mulheres na Obra de J.R.R. Tolkien [Ladies of the Rings: Women in the Work of J.R.R. Tolkien], organised by Rosana Rios and edited by Devir Livraria. It is the first book in the world (as far as I know) that analyses exclusively JRRT's female characters. I felt honoured to write the foreword.

OLHOS ÉLFICOS / ELVISH EYES
Um livro interessantíssimo, que recomendo apesar de conter alguns poucos erros factuais, é The Science of Middle-earth de Henry Gee (Cold Spring Press, 2004). No capítulo "The Eyes of Legolas Greenleaf", por exemplo, o autor deduz que a acuidade visual de Legolas (que consegue distinguir os 105 rohirrim, a cor dos seus cabelos e as pontas de suas lanças a cinco léguas de distância) é de cerca de 8 segundos de arco. Como o limite da acuidade humana é cerca de 12 minutos de arco, os elfos enxergam 90 vezes melhor que os humanos. Outras discussões semelhantes fazem deste livro uma das melhores análises científicas da obra de Tolkien desde O Atlas da Terra-média.

A very interesting book, which I recommend even though it contains a few factual errors, is The Science of Middle-earth by Henry Gee (Cold Spring Press, 2004). In the chapter "The Eyes of Legolas Greenleaf", for instance, the author deduces that the visual acuity of Legolas (who can distinguish the 105 Rohirrim, their hair colour and the points of their spears from five leagues away) is about 8 seconds of arc. Since the limit of human acuity is about 12 minutes of arc, Elves can see 90 times better than humans. Other similar discussions make this book one of the best scientific analyses of Tolkien's work since The Atlas of Middle-earth.

Não se trata de um prêmio, e sim de uma seleção de obras para crianças e jovens, indicada para a composição de bibliotecas.

On 14 July FNLIJ (the Brasilian National Foundation for Children's and Youth Books) let me know that my book Explicando Tolkien [Explaining Tolkien] had been chosen for their Basic Collection in the Information category. This is not a prize, but rather a selection of works for children and young people, indicated for the composition of libraries.

SOBRE A RETRADUÇÃO DE O SENHOR DOS ANÉIS / ON THE RETRANSLATION OF THE LORD OF THE RINGS Em 2004-07-28 a Livraria Martins Fontes Editora publicou o seguinte texto para a imprensa:

O Senhor dos Anéis terá nova tradução Em agosto deste ano a Martins Fontes comemora 10 anos de publicação de O Senhor dos Anéis. Coincidentemente, há cinqüenta anos o primeiro volume da série – A Sociedade do Anel – era lançado na Inglaterra. Aproveitando a ocasião, a Editora inicia os trabalhos para a publicação de uma nova tradução da obra, com o principal objetivo de aproximar ainda mais a edição brasileira do contexto e da linguagem do original. Merecerá cuidado especial por parte dos tradutores o registro da linguagem da narração e dos diferentes povos. Além disso, serão repensados os nomes de alguns personagens e lugares, que talvez sofram pequenas mudanças levando em conta as instruções que o próprio autor deixou para seus tradutores. O trabalho de tradução do texto será feito por Waldéa Barcellos, tradutora de O Silmarillion, Mestre Gil de Ham e Roverandom, obras de Tolkien já publicadas pela Martins Fontes. Waldéa terá como consultor e interlocutor constante o pesquisador da vida e da obra de Tolkien, Ronald Kyrmse, também encarregado de traduzir os poemas do livro. Ronald Kyrmse tornou-se membro da Tolkien Society britânica e dos "Quendili", grupo de estudos dos idiomas élficos, numa época em que a obra do autor ainda não estava disponível em boas versões estinadas aos leitores brasileiros. Em 1989, fundou a "Heren Hyarmeno" – a Ordem do Sul –, o primeiro grupo de entusiastas tolkienianos no Brasil, que existe até hoje. Colaborou em todas as publicações da Martins Fontes Editora relacionados com Tolkien, através de traduções, revisões técnicas e consultoria, desde a biografia do autor em 1992 até as mais recentes edições do cânone tolkieniano. Em novembro de 2003, lançou pela Martins Fontes o livro Explicando Tolkien. A coordenação da tradução como um todo ficará a cargo de Monica Stahel. Não é exagero afirmar que com a retradução de O Senhor dos Anéis uma 2ª Era se inicia para os fãs das obras do "professor". O lançamento da nova tradução ainda não tem data prevista, mas enquanto dura o suspense os leitores podem conferir a edição atual de O Senhor dos Anéis em três livros avulsos ou num único volume, além das outras obras de Tolkien publicadas pela Martins Fontes, como O Hobbit, Contos inacabados, O Silmarillion, Mestre Gil de Ham e Roverandom.

The Lord of the Rings will have a new translation In August of this year Martins Fontes celebrates 10 years’ publication of The Lord of the Rings. Coincidentally, it was fifty years ago that the first volume of the series – The Fellowship of the Ring – came out in England. Taking the occasion, the editors are picking up publication of a new translation of the work, aiming mainly at bringing the Brasilian edition nearer to the context and language of the original. The translators will lavish special care on the register of narrative language and that of the various peoples. Furthermore, the names of some characters and places will be reviewed and may suffer small changes, considering the instructions the author himself left for his translators. The job of translating the text will be taken up by Waldéa Barcellos, translator of The Silmarillion, Farmer Giles of Ham and Roverandom, works by Tolkien already published by Martins Fontes. Waldéa’s consultant and constant partner will be Ronald Kyrmse, researcher of Tolkien’s life and work, who has also been charged with translating the book’s poems. Ronald Kyrmse became a member of the British Tolkien Society and of the "Quendili", a group for studying the Elvish languages, at a time when the author's work was not yet available in good versions aimed at Brasilian readers. In 1989 he founded "Heren Hyarmeno" – the Order of the South – the first group of Tolkien enthusiasts in Brasil, which exists to this day. He collaborated in all Tolkien-related publications of Livraria Martins Fontes Editora through translations, technical revisions and consulting work, from the author's biography in 1992 to the most recent editions of the Tolkienian canon. In November 2003 he published through Martins Fontes the book Explicando Tolkien [Explaining Tolkien]. Monica Stahel will be in charge of overall co-ordination of the translation. It is not an exaggeration to state that retranslation of The Lord of the Rings inaugurates a 2nd Age for fans of the "professor’s" works. There is not yet a projected date for launch of the new translation, but while suspense lasts readers may peruse the existing edition of The Lord of the Rings in three separate books or a single volume, besides the remaining works by Tolkien published by Martins Fontes, such as The Hobbit, Unfinished Tales, The Silmarillion, Farmer Giles of Ham and Roverandom.

NOVA TRADUÇÃO BRASILEIRA DO SdA / NEW BRASILIAN TRANSLATION OF LotR
Ontem, em reunião na editora Martins Fontes, foi-me confiado coordenar e revisar uma nova tradução brasileira do Senhor dos Anéis, comemorando o cinqüentenário da publicação de The Lord of the Rings no Reino Unido e os dez anos da primeira tradução da MF. Monica Stahel coordenará pela MF, e Waldéa Barcellos - que já traduziu O Silmarillion, Mestre Gil de Ham e Roverandom - será a tradutora.

Yesterday, in a meeting at the Martins Fontes publishing house, I was entrusted with revising and co-ordinating a new Brasilian translation of The Lord of the Rings, commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of its publication in the United Kingdom and the tenth anniversary of the first translation from MF. Monica Stahel will co-ordinate for MF, and Waldéa Barcellos - who has already translated The Silmarillion, Farmer Giles of Ham and Roverandom - will be the translator.

I have just received the book The Flight of Dragons by Peter Dickinson (1979, out of print). The author "demonstrates" that dragons really existed and explains how it was possible for them to fly, breathe fire etc. Quotations include The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, Beowulf and works of C.S.Lewis.

O seguinte texto vem do excelente livro The Annotated Hobbit [O Hobbit Comentado] de Douglas A. Anderson: (( Nem no Hobbit, nem no Senhor dos Anéis Tolkien dá qualquer pista sobre a resposta de uma questão que tem sido ferozmente debatida entre seus leitores: Seus elfos tinham orelhas pontudas? O mais próximo que se pode dar de uma resposta baseia-se nos elementos lingüísticos dos idiomas inventados por Tolkien. Nas “Etimologias”, uma espécie de dicionário de relações entre as palavras élficas que Tolkien mantinha para seu uso pessoal na década de 1930, e que agora foi publicado no quinto volume da History [of Middle-earth], The Lost Road, ele observa acerca das bases LAS{1} de lassê = “folha” e LAS{2} “escutar” (lassê = “orelha”) que existe uma possível relação entre ambas, consistindo no fato de que nos elfos as “orelhas eram mais pontudas e em forma de folha” do que as humanas. Tudo o que se pode dizer, portanto, é que Tolkien certamente era dessa opinião em determinada época (provavelmente em meados da década de 1930). The following text comes from the excellent book The Annotated Hobbit by Douglas A. Anderson: (( In neither The Hobbit nor The Lord of the Rings does Tolkien give any clue to the answer to a question that has been fiercely debated among his readership: Did his Elves have pointed ears? The nearest thing to an answer that one can give is founded on the linguistic elements in Tolkien’s invented languages. In the “Etymologies”, a kind of dictionary of Elvish word relationships that Tolkien maintained for his personal use in the 1930s, which is now published in volume five of the History [of Middle-earth], The Lost Road, he notes in regard to the stems LAS{1} from lassê = “leaf” and LAS{2} “listen” (lassê = “ear”) that there is a possible relationship between the two in that Elven “ears were more pointed and leaf-shaped” than human ones. All that can be said, then, is that certainly at one time (probably in the mid-1930s) Tolkien held this view. Tolkien’s own artwork does not provide any further clues, for in the only drawing in which he depicts elves, they appear as very small figures, and features such as ears are not visible. DO LIVRO DE SIMON TOLKIEN / FROM SIMON TOLKIEN'S BOOK
Estou lendo The Stepmother [A Madrasta] de Simon Tolkien, neto de JRRT e filho de Christopher Tolkien. É seu primeiro livro, um romance policial e de suspense. Ele escreve sobre um dos personagens: "Thomas's heart and mind belonged to his mother and to the house in which her family, the Sackvilles, had lived for generations" ["O coração e a mente de Thomas pertenciam à sua mãe e à casa onde sua família, os Sackvilles, haviam morado por gerações"]. Sackville é também o nome de uma família aristocrática do Condado, nas obras de JRRT [traduzido em português como "Sacola"]. A essa família pertencia a famosa Lobélia Sacola-Bolseiro. É sem dúvida uma homenagem de Simon Tolkien ao célebre avô.

I am reading The Stepmother by Simon Tolkien, JRRT's grandson and son of Christopher Tolkien. It is his first book, a crime and suspense novel. He writes about one of the characters: "Thomas's heart and mind belonged to his mother and to the house in which her family, the Sackvilles, had lived for generations". Sackville is also the name of an aristocratic family in the Shire, in JRRT's works. To that family belonged the famous Lobelia Sackville-Baggins. This is doubtless a bow from Simon Tolkien to his notorious grandfather.
