SENHORAS DOS ANÉIS / LADIES OF THE RINGS
Em 2005-07-23 participei de uma mesa redonda no lançamento do livro Senhoras dos Anéis: Mulheres na Obra de J.R.R. Tolkien, organizado por Rosana Rios e editado pela Devir Livraria. É o primeiro livro no mundo (que eu saiba) que analisa exclusivamente as personagens femininas de JRRT. Senti-me honrado em escrever o prefácio.

On 2005-07-23 I took part at a round table at the launch of the book Senhoras dos Anéis: Mulheres na Obra de J.R.R. Tolkien [Ladies of the Rings: Women in the Work of J.R.R. Tolkien], organised by Rosana Rios and edited by Devir Livraria. It is the first book in the world (as far as I know) that analyses exclusively JRRT's female characters. I felt honoured to write the foreword.

De que lado da estrada dirigiam os gondorianos? Do direito, não do esquerdo como seria de se esperar de um autor inglês. Neste trecho do SdA, está claro que os veículos mais lentos andam à direita e os mais rápidos os ultrapassam à esquerda:

On which side of the road did the Gondorians drive? On the right, not on the left as would be expected from an English author. In this passage from the LotR, it is clear that slower vehicles drive on the right and the faster ones pass them on the left:

OLHOS ÉLFICOS / ELVISH EYES
Um livro interessantíssimo, que recomendo apesar de conter alguns poucos erros factuais, é The Science of Middle-earth de Henry Gee (Cold Spring Press, 2004). No capítulo "The Eyes of Legolas Greenleaf", por exemplo, o autor deduz que a acuidade visual de Legolas (que consegue distinguir os 105 rohirrim, a cor dos seus cabelos e as pontas de suas lanças a cinco léguas de distância) é de cerca de 8 segundos de arco. Como o limite da acuidade humana é cerca de 12 minutos de arco, os elfos enxergam 90 vezes melhor que os humanos. Outras discussões semelhantes fazem deste livro uma das melhores análises científicas da obra de Tolkien desde O Atlas da Terra-média.

A very interesting book, which I recommend even though it contains a few factual errors, is The Science of Middle-earth by Henry Gee (Cold Spring Press, 2004). In the chapter "The Eyes of Legolas Greenleaf", for instance, the author deduces that the visual acuity of Legolas (who can distinguish the 105 Rohirrim, their hair colour and the points of their spears from five leagues away) is about 8 seconds of arc. Since the limit of human acuity is about 12 minutes of arc, Elves can see 90 times better than humans. Other similar discussions make this book one of the best scientific analyses of Tolkien's work since The Atlas of Middle-earth.

Incluí em meu site uma mensagem para responder às freqüentes consultas sobre "Como é meu nome em élfico?". A página explica que a pergunta não é fácil de compreender - há no mínimo três interpretações diferentes - e que a resposta também pode ser muito complexa. A página que contém recomendações de fontes de tengwar traz agora uma tabela mostrando o mapeamento de teclado padrão em um arranjo lógico.

I have included in my site a message to answer the frequent inquiries about "How does my name look in Elvish?". The page [in Portuguese] explains that the question is not easy to understand - there are at least three different interpretations - and that the answer may be very complex as well. The page containing recommendations on tengwar fonts now brings a table showing the standard keyboard mapping in a logical arrangement.

The renowned Norwegian lambengolmo (Elvish language scholar) Helge Kåre Fauskanger, author of the Ardalambion site, has a suggestion for an epic showing events before The Lord of the Rings: not The Hobbit, but rather a Westernesse movie. His proposals are here and here. This is one movie I would like to see!

O autor da primeira e mais aclamada biografia de JRRT, e de um importante relato sobre os Inklings, morreu aos 58 anos em 2005-01-04. Esta é uma notícia especialmente triste para mim, pois comecei meu envolvimento "editorial" com livros de e sobre Tolkien traduzindo para o português J. R. R. The author of the first and most acclaimed biography of JRRT, and of an important account of the Inklings, died at 58 on 2005-01-04. This is especially sad news for me, as I started my "editorial" involvement with books by and about Tolkien by translating into Portuguese J. R. R.
