NA ESTRADA EM GONDOR / ON THE ROAD IN GONDOR

On which side of the road did the Gondorians drive? On the right, not on the left as would be expected from an English author. In this passage from the LotR, it is clear that slower vehicles drive on the right and the faster ones pass them on the left:
But most of the traffic went out along the chief highway, and that turned south [...] the wains were moving in three lines, one swifter drawn by horses; another slower, great waggons with fair housings of many colours, drawn by oxen; and along the west rim of the road many smaller carts hauled by trudging men.

A very interesting book, which I recommend even though it contains a few factual errors, is The Science of Middle-earth by Henry Gee (Cold Spring Press, 2004). In the chapter "The Eyes of Legolas Greenleaf", for instance, the author deduces that the visual acuity of Legolas (who can distinguish the 105 Rohirrim, their hair colour and the points of their spears from five leagues away) is about 8 seconds of arc. Since the limit of human acuity is about 12 minutes of arc, Elves can see 90 times better than humans. Other similar discussions make this book one of the best scientific analyses of Tolkien's work since The Atlas of Middle-earth.

PESQUISA ACADÊMICA SOBRE O FILME / ACADEMIC RESEARCH ON THE MOVIE

The Welsh site ic Wales has an article on the matter as well. It will be worthwhile to wait for the final conclusions, which are still in the future. It is interesting to read that for 60% of the respondents the book was the main source of expectation for the movie. This demonstrates that, besides the movie stimulating people to read, the inverse phenomenon is also frequent - enthusiasts of Tolkien's books who wanted to see his world portrayed on screen. Almost half of the respondents read the whole book more than once, and more than 80% watched the component movies more than once. 47.9% of respondents - equally divided among women and men - are between 16 and 25 years of age; there is hope among the young!

NOMES TOLKIENIANOS NA NOMENCLATURA BIOLÓGICA / TOLKIENIAN NAMES IN BIOLOGICAL NOMENCLATURE
