O seguinte texto vem do excelente livro The Annotated Hobbit [O Hobbit Comentado] de Douglas A. Anderson: (( Nem no Hobbit, nem no Senhor dos Anéis Tolkien dá qualquer pista sobre a resposta de uma questão que tem sido ferozmente debatida entre seus leitores: Seus elfos tinham orelhas pontudas? O mais próximo que se pode dar de uma resposta baseia-se nos elementos lingüísticos dos idiomas inventados por Tolkien. Nas “Etimologias”, uma espécie de dicionário de relações entre as palavras élficas que Tolkien mantinha para seu uso pessoal na década de 1930, e que agora foi publicado no quinto volume da History [of Middle-earth], The Lost Road, ele observa acerca das bases LAS{1} de lassê = “folha” e LAS{2} “escutar” (lassê = “orelha”) que existe uma possível relação entre ambas, consistindo no fato de que nos elfos as “orelhas eram mais pontudas e em forma de folha” do que as humanas. Tudo o que se pode dizer, portanto, é que Tolkien certamente era dessa opinião em determinada época (provavelmente em meados da década de 1930). A obra artística do próprio Tolkien não fornece nenhuma pista adicional, pois no único desenho em que representa elfos eles aparecem como figuras muito pequenas, e características tais como orelhas não são visíveis. The following text comes from the excellent book The Annotated Hobbit by Douglas A. Anderson: (( In neither The Hobbit nor The Lord of the Rings does Tolkien give any clue to the answer to a question that has been fiercely debated among his readership: Did his Elves have pointed ears? The nearest thing to an answer that one can give is founded on the linguistic elements in Tolkien’s invented languages. In the “Etymologies”, a kind of dictionary of Elvish word relationships that Tolkien maintained for his personal use in the 1930s, which is now published in volume five of the History [of Middle-earth], The Lost Road, he notes in regard to the stems LAS{1} from lassê = “leaf” and LAS{2} “listen” (lassê = “ear”) that there is a possible relationship between the two in that Elven “ears were more pointed and leaf-shaped” than human ones. All that can be said, then, is that certainly at one time (probably in the mid-1930s) Tolkien held this view. Tolkien’s own artwork does not provide any further clues, for in the only drawing in which he depicts elves, they appear as very small figures, and features such as ears are not visible. NOMES EM ÉLFICO / NAMES IN ELVISH
Muitas vezes ouvimos a pergunta (eu, pelo menos, já a ouvi dezenas de vezes): "Como seria meu nome élfico?". Há três possibilidades: 1. A pessoa quer adotar algum nome élfico existente. Aí basta que procure nas obras de JRRT um que agrade pelo som ou pelo personagem. 2. A pessoa quer criar para si um nome élfico. Será necessário procurar vocábulos em Quenya ou Sindarin e construí-lo de acordo com as regras de composição desses idiomas - nem sempre uma tarefa fácil! 3. A pessoa quer o seu nome traduzido para o élfico. Para isso é preciso saber o que esse nome significa na língua original. Para a segunda hipótese, existem vocabulários bastante completos. Em Quenya, recomendo os que se encontram em Quettaparma Quenyanna e Quettaparma Quenyallo (do e para o inglês). No terceiro caso, há muitas traduções já feitas; proponho consultar o Quenya Lapseparma ("Livro do Bebê em Quenya") e - como complemento - a página "Now We Have All Got Elvish Names" (ou "NWHAGEN").

We have often heard the question (I, for my part, have heard it tens of times): "What would my name be in Elvish?". There are three possibilities: 1. The person wishes to adopt some existent Elvish name. It will be enough to search in JRRT's works for one that pleases based on sound or character. 2. The person wishes to create an Elvish name for her/himself. It will be necessary to look for words in Quenya or Sindarin and to construct it according to composition rules in these languages - not always an easy task! 3. The person wishes her/his name translated to Elvish. To this end it will be necessary to know what that name means in the original language. For the second hypothesis there exist fairly complete vocabularies. In Quenya I recommend those at Quettaparma Quenyanna and Quettaparma Quenyallo (from and to English). In the third case, there are many translations already done; I propose to look up at Quenya Lapseparma ("Quenya Babybook") and - as a complement - the page "Now We Have All Got Elvish Names" (or "NWHAGEN").

Duas cenas inesquecíveis: - o que faz Arwen dar meia-volta quando ia para os Portos Cinzentos, e retornar a Valfenda; - Gandalf e Pippin entrando em Minas Tirith. Não posso dizer mais, exceto que estou ansioso para ver os 5 rolos restantes!...

Today, by special favour from Warner, I was able to watch the first 5 from a total of 10 reels of The Return of the King. Two unforgettable scenes: - what makes Arwen turn back on the way to the Grey Havens, and return to Rivendell; - Gandalf and Pippin entering Minas Tirith. I can say no more, except that I am anxious to see the 5 remaining reels!...
